Welcome to Tryouts

Hello MAHA Hockey Families!

The hockey season is here, and tryouts are just around the corner. We’re excited to get underway and look forward to another great season.

At MAHA, our goal is to make tryouts a positive experience for all players — one that sets them up for success and growth both on and off the ice.

Supporting Your Player

Tryouts can feel stressful for kids. The best thing parents can do is offer encouragement, stay positive, and remind players to do their best and have fun.

Words matter - your support will help them approach the season with confidence, no matter which team they make.

Standards During Tryouts

Closed Tryouts

  • To reduce pressure and distractions, tryouts are closed to parents and spectators.
  • For players under 11: one parent may enter the rink to help them get ready, but must leave once the player is on the ice.

Uniform Guidelines

  • Practice jerseys will be provided.
  • Remove all helmet stickers unless MAHA-approved.
  • Socks: MAHA game colors (black or white w/ stripes).
  • Helmets & Breezers: Black only.

Absences

  • Illness/physical limitations: If a player cannot attend, notify the HOC Director. Players may be evaluated later in a practice setting.
  • Fall sport conflicts: Absences due to fall school sports are excused with prior notice to the HOC Director.

Tryout Process

Step 1: Check-in

  • Player should arrive 1/2 early before tryout session.
  • Stop at the check-in table to receive your practice jersey.

Step 2: On-Ice Evaluations & Opt Out Option

  • Evaluations are conducted by impartial evaluators.
  • Players may be excused early from tryouts if placement is clear at the highest level only.
  • Bantam, Peewee, Squirt: If your player does not wish to participate in tryouts, please contact the HOC Director. They will be placed on the lower-level team for their age group.

Step 3: Player Placement

  • Player placement will be posted to the team site within a couple of days after tryouts are complete.
  • After placements, a 48-hour cooling-off period applies, during which neither the parents nor players may initiate contact with coaches, MAHA Board members or any HOC committee member.

Questions or Concerns

If you have questions or feedback about the tryout process, please reach out directly to the HOC Director. This ensures your concern is addressed quickly and by the right person.

To keep the process fair and consistent, we ask that families do not contact evaluators, coaches, or board members directly.
